Saint Peters Church was constructed on a site donated by Lord Zetland in 1828,

The massive roof timbers were imported from Scandinavia and landed at Hartlepool.

The size of the timbers were too big to Transport by road .

The fishermen of Redcar rallied round and rowed their small boats to Hartlepool,

they each tied a bundle of the massive timbers to the stern of their boats and

rowed back to Redacr towing the timbers astern. What a sight it must have been,

the timbers were three times as long as the boats!

On arrival they floated the timbers on to their boats wheels and a team

of horses hauled them to the church site.
